Novenas are an ancient tradition dating back to the days of the Apostles. Pray with us today as we mark the beginning of the novena leading up to the feast day of the glorious Saint Benedict, sublime model of virtue and faith, presenting an extraordinary pair of gold toned, circa 1800's medals from France.  The intricate engravings of the both medals reveal the powerful symbols and inscriptions that have protected and inspired countless souls for centuries.

On one, the venerable image of St. Benedict stands tall, his gaze resolute and kind, holding the cross in one hand and the Rule of his Order in the other. This rare image pre-dates 1880 when the design of the great saint's medal was changed to the one we see today in commemoration of the 1400th anniversary of his birth. Encircling St. Benedict are the Latin letters CRVX S.P. Benedicti that translate to Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti, The Cross of [our] Holy Father Benedict. The reverse side bears the Cross of St. Benedict, surrounded by the initials of a Latin prayer of exorcism and protection. The artistry on this 3/4-inch sacramental commands respect, devotion and spiritual fortitude.

The second treasure, a 5/8-inch miraculous medal, is equally captivating. This petite piece exudes an ethereal glow while is depicts the Virgin Mary with open arms, rays of light streaming from her hands, a halo encircling her head and the French inscription, O Marie concue sans peche priez pour nous qui avons recours a vous, which translates to O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to you. The reverse side reveals the profound Marian insignia: a cross and an ‘M’ intertwined, surmounted by two hearts – one crowned with thorns, the other pierced by a sword – symbolizing the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Found together, but may be worn separately, these medals form a harmonious duet of faith and history, and are a testament to the enduring power of belief and the artistry of a bygone era. Presented on an 18-inch, 1.2 mm, 14k gold over sterling silver long curb chain they speak of a journey through time, a shared legacy of protection, hope, and divine intercession. These relics, once clasped in the hands of the faithful, now call to a new guardian to cherish their legacy and the timeless stories they silently convey.
